And now I have my questions and discussion points for the episode!
1. Let's start with the BIGGEST question of the episode: Who is Neal? A regular, ordinary guy? Baelfire? Another FTL/Magical person, such as the White Rabbit? I personally think the chances of Neal being a regular Earth-based person are vanishingly small. This is a show about fairytales and true love and destiny. And, even if those things didn't exist in our world before, someone wrote an exceedingly powerful curse that punched a hole into our world which not only brought FTL with it but could arrange for someone outside the curse (Emma) to show up on her 28th birthday.
2. Relatedly, what was in that box? Was it something that August came up with himself or he is working with someone else? A picture of the dagger is a popular theory but that only works if Neal is Baelfire and someone else knows that. August seemed to have expected whatever was in the box to be able to convince someone who knows nothing of magic.
3. Was August working with someone else? I say most likely for two reasons: August has information (the dagger) and resources (magical whatsit in a box) that he shouldn't as a child refugee from FTL, and...well, let's be honest - August is not the most focused person in the world. Perhaps guilt alone could get him going but I would not be surprised to find out someone else is pushing him along and using him as their agent in the world. (Assuming they are someone in Storybrooke they would need an outside agent.)
4. How forgiving do you think Emma is going to be about August's interference in her life? On one hand, he did set her up to not be able to trust anyone for a long time, but on the other, he did pay for it by turning to wood. And she managed to not punch Gold after he took the potion.
5. Do you think that Jennifer Morrison pulled off being anywhere near a teenager? In my opinion, not so much, but that's good because Michael Raymond-James didn't look particularly young either.
6. Now that we've seen more of Hook interacting with Emma (along with a little more of him with the others), what do you think? So far they seem to be going for charming, self-centered rogue as opposed to evil, bad guy. After all, how angry are we supposed to be that he wants revenge on Rumpelstiltskin? So long as he stays focused and doesn't kill Belle he is pretty well justified.
7. And will he have a grudge against Emma for leaving him behind? I suppose it depends on whether he realizes that she left him in safety and only delayed him a bit. It was certainly the smart thing for her to do since he made it clear that his allegiance was changeable.
8. No Rumpelstiltskin. No Regina. Barely any Storybrooke at all. Did it work for you? Considering that an Emma episode would have to take place in the real world and in present day FTL, were you happy they didn't try to shove a Storybrooke plot into the episode?
9. The dream that Aurora and Henry both had obviously signals a connection and each saw the other through the fire. Could this be used to create a communication link between the worlds? Might it also have some larger meaning, perhaps connecting things to another level of reality/another world?
10. We didn't learn too much about the giants in this episode but got a lot of hints of their history. Considering that the beans were lost before Rumpelstiltskin became the Dark One, if they did an episode about the war, it could turn out to be a Blue Fairy backstory episode. Hmmm. I'd also like to find out more about Jack!
11. To end, how much did you like fierce mama bear Snow White? I loved it. And I loved that Emma is finally willing to initiate a hug with her mother.
