The original title of this episode was "Diamond in the Rough," another term used about Aladdin in the Disney film. The original title was leaked by director Norman Buckley via his Instagram account on August 11, 2016 and can also be seen on concept art by illustrator Douglas McLean. The same day, Adam Horowitz officially announced that the title was "Street Rats" via his Twitter account.

The reason why Mr. Gold cuts his hair in this episode ("Strange Case") is that Robert Carlyle cut his hair short for his role as Franco Begbie in the movie T2 Trainspotting. For the first episodes of Season Six, he wore a wig.

ABANDONED IDEAS: Originally, the episode (The Other Shoe) was going to feature a voodoo mask similar to the transformation talisman used by Dr. Facilier in the Disney film The Princess and the Frog. The mask was created for the episode, but did not make it onto the screen.

"The Other Shoe" is a reference to the Glass Slippers and the "other" side of the story.

It is also a reference to the Charles Perrault version of the "Cinderella" fairy tale, where Cinderella, after the prince puts the glass slipper on her foot, proceeds to produce the other slipper, which she has kept. In the Disney film adaptation, Lady Tremaine shatters the prince's copy of the glass slipper, but Cinderella proves her identity by presenting the other slipper.
