When Robin enters Oz, the magic portal lands on the guard and the guard's feet are sticking out, just like the Wicked Witch of the East's death scene from the film The Wizard of Oz (itself based on a scene from the novel, as mentioned under "Fairy Tales and Folklore").

Kalinda Vazquez came up with the title of this episode, which is an egg-based pun.

The title is taken from the saying "The best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry," which is adapted from the poem "To a Mouse" by Robert Burns: "The best-laid schemes o' mice an' men / Gang aft agley" (meaning "The best-laid schemes of mice and men / Go oft awry").

According to Kristin Bauer van Straten, the chemistry between Maleficent and Regina was intentionally portrayed to hint at them having a romantic relationship:

So, this happened at Dragoncon…

“Do you think Regina and Maleficent had a thing/relationship?”

This question was asked towards Kristin Bauer who portrays Maleficent on Once Upon a Time. Bauer replied, “I think there’s something going on. I love Lana (Parrilla), so that’s what came across in filming the scenes and we just put that into the characters. And also, those scenes were so pivotal I felt, for Maleficent. She was pretty much done and that young girl saw something in her. We just kept rolling with that relationship that we felt personally and I thought made sense with the scene as well, yes.”

The establishing shot of Ursula's apartment building is stock footage of a New York City apartment building from the website Framepool.

The same footage was used in the 2013 black comedy superhero film Kick-Ass 2.

(the site doesn't exist anymore, I guess)

Goofs: The old Storybrooke Pet Shelter sign can be seen in an establishing shot of Granny's Diner, even though Ingrid's ice cream shop, Any Given Sundae, moved into the pet shelter's premises in "A Tale of Two Sisters" and was clearly established as still being there in episodes before and after "Heroes and Villains." The shot seems to be stock footage from Season One.
