Red Handed Questions
Mar. 14th, 2012 08:48 pmI have my discussion questions for Red Handed.
Excellent episode and lots of things happened in this one.
1. Who called Red as the Big Bad Wolf? I know I didn't and I think they did a good job of confusing the issue on who was the wolf until the reveal. And I certainly didn't think they would have her eat Peter. (Though that I should have realized since she had talked about losing love.)
2. Why didn't Granny TELL Red, especially after she ate several townspeople? Actually why not before since then Red doesn't have to carry the guilt of killing anyone? I'd say that knowing you ate people is more of burden than knowing you are a werewolf.
3. Of course the meta reason she didn't tell is to carry the metaphor through the whole plot relating werewolfism to female sexuality. I thought it worked on that level even though it wasn't terribly subtle. There were times I thought I was watching a Buffy episode. (And I like Buffy.)
4. Who else wanted Ruby to continue working with Emma a bit longer? Ruby could have quit the diner a few episodes ago, interwoven the plots a bit more, and forestalled the questions on who is calling Emma from the station before going back this episode. Emma could really use a deputy or at least a dispatcher.
5. Ruby channeling her inner Red was wonderful and I loved how she became more Red-like as the episode progressed. Maybe instead of kissing everyone, Emma simply needs to give each townsperson a pep talk and take even a brief personal interest in them. Though kissing everyone would be good too.
6. David. What was he doing wandering about looking for someone or something? Why was he so spacey? My theory is that his real memories are trying to get out. Perhaps tacked-on, late model curse memories aren't as strong as original flavor ones? One thing I don't think happened is that Regina took his heart, simply because I don't think Regina can do that in Storybrooke. Squeeze previously taken hearts: yes. Take new ones: no. Though I could be wrong, we haven't seen any evidence of her using new magic so far.
7. Regina didn't have much to do here besides show up and yell at Emma for bothering David which seriously makes me wonder what she is up to. Why appear to frame David with phone records last week while defending his innocence this week? Maybe she needed a little time to properly frame Mary Margaret and wanted the attention on David as she did it?
8. How did Mary Margaret's fingerprints get on the inside of that box? We know she didn't put the heart there so I'm thinking it was probably a box that Snow had before she ran and Regina kept it. Or, as Regina has keys to the whole town, it would be easy for her to go into the apartment and get a box while Mary Margaret is working.
9. Do you think David will support Mary Margaret even with the evidence against her or will he desert her? I'm not sure. On one hand, there are strong feelings of true love pulling them together, and, on the other, curse.
10. And the heart. I don't think it's Kathryn's heart since that is the most obvious choice. I also don't think it's the heart of anyone who is currently alive since those hearts don't look like real hearts. Even if they don't glow when Regina isn't holding them, they still look like metaphorical representations of hearts without the blood and arteries. But we know Regina is happy to add real hearts of dead people to her collection so I'm betting that it is one of those. (Or maybe Graham's heart - she squeezed his metaphorical heart to dust but that doesn't mean his real heart wasn't still there and mostly undamaged.)
11. Which leaves the question of why bury it by the toll bridge and would Regina expect Emma to be able find it without Ruby's help?

Date: 2012-03-15 01:43 am (UTC)I don't try to predict what is going to happen in a tv show. It's more fun to just go along for the ride:) I loved that Red turned out to be the wolf. I didn't love that she ate Peter. That part made me very sad.

Date: 2012-03-15 01:19 am (UTC)I also liked that Ruby became more like Red as the episode progressed and that the change was pretty much complete by the end of the episode.
Red being the wolf shocked me beyond words. It was totally unexpected. I totally loved it that she was the wolf but I think Granny did Red a HUGE disservice by not telling her. I know Granny thought she was protecting her granddaughter but now Red has to live with the fact that not only is she capable of turning into this fierce wolf but that she killed people who were important to her. Of course, if Granny told her, there wouldn't have been this wonderful episode that allowed Meghan Ory to show how talented she is as an actress.
I think Kathryn is in the hospital basement with Belle. I think that's where Regina keeps the people she wants everyone to think is dead. I wouldn't be surprised to see Graham there, too.
I want to know how David got that cut on his head. Though I loved that Ruby tracked his scent like a wolf would.
I don't even try to predict what will happen anymore because the writers always end up turning it all upside down which I LOVE.

Date: 2012-03-15 01:51 am (UTC)Yes. She didn't have her memories back but she had herself back and that's good! I liked how they showed her look changing from the overly done Ruby look so a more toned down Red look.
As for Kathryn, I think in the basement is the most logical place for her. She was obviously spirited away right after the accident. Unless she is wandering in the woods and Regina is just hoping she won't show up any time soon.
I'd be surprised to see Graham there! We saw his heart crushed into dust and I don't think you can come back for that. :)
Oh yes, the cut on his head. What does that mean? I get the feeling we are going to come back to that because why give him a cut if it's nothing?

Date: 2012-03-15 01:37 am (UTC)The only thing that would have made it even better would have been some Gold/Rumple screen time (icing on the cake, so to speak).

Date: 2012-03-15 02:12 am (UTC)Yes, having some Carlyle would have been excellent but I think they were letting the man rest before the last run of episodes. :)

Date: 2012-03-15 03:44 am (UTC)10. We never actually saw the heart. It might be the real deal unlike Graham's.
9. I think David loves her too much to do anything but support her.

Date: 2012-03-15 02:34 pm (UTC)10. I think it is a real heart since I don't see Ruby being as freaked out about a 'heart' in a box. It needs to be horrible and gross. But it could still be Graham's heart! Only his real heart which was still in his chest and not the metaphorical heart Regina squeezed to dust.
9. I hope so. The curse has sat hard on David to the point where he seems unable to act or to focus. I can see it making him dither so that he can't turn against her but he also can't support her. That seems to be the curse's MO with him.

Date: 2012-03-15 05:20 pm (UTC)I agree that Emma will stick by Mary Margaret! She should remember that she was with her that evening when Kathryn went missing.

Date: 2012-03-15 04:30 pm (UTC)2. I suppose she thought Red wouldn't find out since she has no memory of her nightly excursions. And there is something to be said for that. But once she got the hood from the wizard (Rumple?) she should have told her. She would have worn the damn thing then.
4. I wanted Ruby to keep working for Emma a bit longer. Going back to the diner was probably inevitable but Ruby's been living/working with Granny her entire life and working for Emma would have given her some independence. A chance to experience life a bit. Sure, it's not the same as spotting lemurs in Nepal (I'm just going to ignore that they don't live there) but at least it was something. And if she had gone back to the diner later because Granny's not getting any younger and someone has to take over, I would have been fine with that.
8. I think the box belonged to Snow in FTL. Why Regina would keep it I don't know. Regina is not the chess player Gold is so I doubt she would have kept it for future use, but it belonging to Snow before is the only thing that makes sense at this point.
9. I keep flip-flopping about this. Charming would support her. No doubt about that. But David... He loves her, sure, but he's such a coward. Not putting money on this either way.

Date: 2012-03-15 05:24 pm (UTC)2. Yes, once she had the cloak that was time to tell. It's one thing to tell someone that they are a werewolf and there is nothing they can do about it and another to say it and tell them you have a cure of sorts.
4. Heh. I believe the lemurs in Nepal was supposed to be a hint and not an error on the part of the writers. I don't know what it means (except that he was lying) but they mentioned in an interview that we should look out for the line.
