Goof: During the first airing of the episode, a writing card says the Camelot flashbacks about Merlin and Nimue take place 200 years before Emma comes to Camelot. However, Adam Horowitz confirmed it was a mistake, because the scenes take place 500 years before.

This mistake was fixed for the Blu-ray and DVD release.

The Camelot and the Enchanted Forest flashbacks in the episode, "Nimue", occur in various places of the overall timeline.

The events that feature Merlin and the Holy Grail occur 1000 years before Arthur becomes king in "The Broken Kingdom."

The rest of the events occur 500 years after Merlin drinks from the Holy Grail, right before the quick-scene in "Dreamcatcher," and 500 years before Arthur becomes king in "The Broken Kingdom."

They also occur centuries before "The Apprentice."

In Broken Heart, it’s revealed that Merlin's message from The Bear and the Bow was recorded in the kitchen of Granny's Diner, and that the Dark One who found Merlin was Hook. If you watch the "recording" in The Bear and the Bow, you can see the kitchen shelves and lamps behind Merlin, and as Merlin turns his head as he hears the Dark One coming, Hook's silhouette can be seen in the background, behind Merlin's left arm. It matches what is seen when Merlin records the message in this episode.

In Birth, the scene where Hook's neck begins to bleed, and the scene where Emma transforms him into a Dark One, were originally written as one single scene. It was Jerome Schwartz's idea to split the scene in half and have Emma teleport herself and Hook to the middlemist field, which radically changed the tone of the scene.

In Birth, for the scene where Emma's loved ones are prisoners in the Caledonian Forest, there was talk of putting everyone in a giant rolling cage. Another idea was to put them all in a cage full of branches. However, they realized that this would be a challenge, with so many people in the scene, so the director came up with the idea of having everyone tied to the trees instead.

In a deleted scene from Nimue, as they travel to the Temple of Prometheus, Nimue picks up the Holy Grail from her bag and stares at it. She then asks Merlin if they will really melt it down. Merlin answers that he sees a legendary sword will found a kingdom and also inspire books and movies, and he "thinks it's that same sword." As they walk, Merlin sees the Oxleigh sign and wants to go in the other direction, which Nimue quickly realizes and explains that she wants to see her old village. Before Merlin follows her, he speaks to himself by saying that she is a brave woman.

In a deleted scene from Dreamcatcher, a young Apprentice rushes up the stairs to Merlin's tower. As he enters, the Sorcerer's hat is sitting on the table while Merlin is brewing a potion. Merlin asks, "Did you get it, my Apprentice?" and the boy says yes and hands the sorcerer a bundle. Merlin unwraps the bundle, which contains a small squid and says that at last, they have everything that they need. The boy asks if there is anything else he can do for him, but Merlin says no, he has done his part and the rest is up to Merlin. The sorcerer drops the squid into a cauldron and the liquid turns black with squid ink. As Merlin pours the brew into a bottle, the Apprentice asks if the ink will stop the Dark One, but sorcerer says that this will merely stun and slow down their adversary; only one object can stop the darkness. A worried Apprentice points out to his master that he (Merlin) knows what will happen if he uses the dagger against the Dark One and Merlin admits that he knows fully well the consequences of wielding it. "But I must do what needs to be done", he says as he corks the bottle.
