So Much More (Prologue)

Welcome Beauty, banish fear, you are Queen and Mistress here.
~Beauty and the Beast (Marie le Prince de Beaumont)
Note: I do not own “Once Upon A Time” and I do not make a profit from writing this story. I’m just amusing myself.
Authors Note: I am extremely upset with the loss of my fairy tale; I began to pen this before the promo of 1X12 was out. I may adapt things from the episode if I feel it can work with my own fanon. It will also have nods to the Disney telling, the original tale, and the 80s television series. This is how I want my tale as old as time to be told…
Setting: Enchanted Forest
Rating: PG (later chapters will go higher)
Warnings: None so far but later will include violence, language and sensual content.
Genre: Angst/Hurt/Comfort/Mystery/General/Romance (I’m covering all the bases)
Word Count: 1,000
Cast: (in order of appearance/mention) Rumpelstiltskin, Belle, Rumpelstiltskin’s associates and an unnamed mark
Summary: She always wanted more than the provincial life, in hindsight she should have been careful what she wished for.
The home of Rumpelstiltskin was always dark, it did not matter what time of day it was. The sun could be high in the sky and it would not permeate the darkened windows. She missed the outdoors, the summer wind through her hair, but she had a library so all hope was not lost. He would never bother her in that room, leaving it as a sanctuary. She never understood why, he would come into her room, bother her while she did her laundry, or pester her during dinner. But whenever she graced those doors, he would not step inside; sometimes he would look in from the doors but would never cross the threshold.
She knew many viewed the creature as a nuisance and demon. Most times she was not sure, his nature was not evil, but he was manipulative. She wasn’t sure if he was the demon people claimed him to be, or an Imp that he called himself. He had too much power than normal Imps should have. But she didn’t like to focus on what he could be, not when she was a prisoner in his house, not when she was at his mercy. For some reason he seemed to be merciful, whatever she needed would appear before her, and she was not being abused. She was thankful for that. She had no idea how many days had passed when he came to her with a question. She expected it to be about strategy or her thoughts on the War.
“What do you want in life?” his voice echoed through the room, the question gave her pause.
She turned to find him leaning in the doorway of her room, “What do you mean?” she asked.
“It’s a simple question, dear, no need to analyze the connotation,” he informed her, a smirk on his lips, “Most ladies your age are focusing on suitors, marriage and children. Why don’t you?”
She set down the papers she had been sorting through, meeting his gaze, “I have not met someone who is worth my time. I want much more than a simple provincial life that only consists of the need to be married and have children,” she informed him, he nodded.
“That is admirable, you have no idea what people having been willing to pay to have such a simple life…” he mused, then she heard a male’s voice calling through the home.
She had never seen anyone else but him here, curiosity getting the best of her as she followed him down the hall. He headed to the entry way where a man and woman waited for him. The couple looked like an average couple but the feeling they gave off was untrustworthy. They both wore sickening grins as he approached them; it was unusual for people to be happy to see Rumpelstiltskin.
As Belle stopped near them, they both looked at her, studying her. She didn’t like the way they looked at her, she felt like she was prey. “Ooo, does Rumpelstiltskin have a friend?” the man asked.
The woman with messy red hair grinned, “She’s beautiful, I don’t blame you for making friends with her,” Belle felt ill at their words.
“No, she is here strictly here in a business capacity, nothing more. Belle, you may go,” Rumpelstiltskin said, waving her off, “What news do you bring me?” he asked, changing the subject. Belle walked as far as she could before ducking around the corner to eavesdrop. She wanted to know what they could possibly doing here, looking so positively gleeful. They first seemed ordinary but there was something off about them.
“We have another for you, we let him know the whispers we’ve heard of a powerful man…” they both laughed at this, an ugly, sinister sound, “Who could assist him in his time of need. He will be here in one day’s time,” the woman said.
Belle peered around the corner to see Rumpelstiltskin cocking his head as he looked at the woman. “Good, good. Do you realize you’re with child?” he asked, suddenly, the couple exchanged looks.
“Huh, guess you were right,” the woman said to her husband, who shrugged.
Rumpelstiltskin reached out, placing a hand on the woman’s abdomen, “It’s a boy…he’ll be an annoying little bug…”
“Is that a good thing or a bad thing?” the husband asked, eyebrows arched.
Rumpelstiltskin shrugged as he gestured to the front door, “You’ll have to wait and see.” As the couple left, he turned his head in her direction. “Belle, that is a very rude habit of yours I hope you break,” he said loudly. She squeaked and raced to the library, slamming the heavy door shut behind her.
She heard his laughter, that high, mad pitch through the thick wood. She swallowed hard, this was the first time she felt fear there. She scolded herself immediately, since it was by her own doing. She did not know how many hours she on edge, waiting for something to happen. Not even the written words across the gold lined pages could calm her fear or worry.
“Child, you have no need to hide away in here. I hold no ill will,” his voice sounded very close, like a whisper in her ear, she looked around to make sure he wasn’t standing in there with her. “Now come and eat, since you will be sequestered within this room all tomorrow, not that you mind.” he informed her.
She slowly cracked the door open and jumped back as he was leaning in, almost nose to nose with her. He just laughed, spinning on his heel before heading down the hall. With a sigh she followed to the well lit dining room where a feast waited for her.
She took a seat at the head of the table as he lazily dropped into the chair on the other end. “You’re an extremely complicated person aren’t you?” she asked, he grinned at her, turkey leg in hand.
“You have no idea.”
---
This is the just the beginning of what you may call a "fix-it" fic but I've had this idea since I first learned of Belle. Rumpelstiltskin is NOT the Beast in this, if anything he is the "Enchantress" of this story. Kudos if you figured out his associates!
The next part WILL be set in Storybrooke and will flip back and forth, much like "Debt to the Devil" and the show itself.

Date: 2012-01-30 08:09 pm (UTC)Rumple/Gold is my favorite character (Carlyle being the chief attraction for me to the series).
I like the addition of Rumple's two "associates" (nice touch, and a good bow to canon too).
