i was wondering what other myths they are going to get into. most of what i have seen so far are basted off of Grimm's faire tales but the little mermaid is Hans Christen Anderson. are they going to get in to Robin Hood, King Arther,Alice in wonderland, the Wizard of Oz, Norse and Greek myths, Lovecraft??
i read a book once that stated that all stories old and new exist in another space and time, you just have to be-able to get there.

I know copyright plays a big role: anything that's in the public domain or is licensed/owned by Disney/ABC could potentially come up and that includes most of the things on your list. One of the writers mentioned that this is one of the problems with Peter Pan characters showing up - they don't have a license for it.

Grimm Brothers and Hans Christian Anderson are fair game for the writers as those stories are in the public domain. If Disney still owns the rights to the characters, then those can be included as Disney owns ABC who produce the show. We have already seen the Blue Fairy from Pinocchio but in the original story she was called The Fairy with the Turquoise Hair. So the writers have gone with the disney version over the original.

I think they will stick with the 'disneyish' version of the fairytale characters to start off with.

I love your OUAT-related musings.

I think it's certainly going to be interesting to see who/what stories they explore next...there's such a wide variety of potential stories out there. I hope we'll see some of the stories you've mentioned above.

I love the idea that all stories exist together, in different spaces and time...usually we'd need Doctor Who's TARDIS to reach them, but now, we have this.

I wonder how big Storybrooke is. And if there's a second season, there'll be so much more to explore!

Robin Hood and King Arthur are definitely public domain, so they might show up eventually. Personally, I'm hoping for some non-European myths to show up - using other cultures' myths would be a great way to add diversity to the show (although Norse mythology would be cool to see). I also have an idea for an OC based off of Japanese mythology who I'll probably write once I get the bulk of my exams behind me.

I second that hope for sure, I'd love to see some non-European myths, or at least some of the lesser-known European fairy tales, combined with a more colourblind approach to casting.

I realise Disney likes to think they've got a monopoly on fairy tales, but it would be nice to see them branch out from that and give us something old made new again!

Considering that in the EW interview they said they wanted Peter Pan but couldn't do it (at least right now, due to righs issues), I'd say the following are fair game as Disney (which, of coures owns ABC) has done moviews of them.

ALice

and Robin Hood (and Disney did do a live action version of that back in the 50s), both are in the public domain btw too.

And it should be noted (if it hasn't been already) that OUAT sticks to Disney version over origina.

I mean in the book, Jiminiy doesn't last long, Pinoch steps on him to shut him up

King Arthur and Robin Hood are not fairytales, they are legends.

Just want to clear that up.

I think I read somewhere that Peter Pan might not show up in the show due to copyrights issues or something.

Well, the name of a character in the next episode is the same name of a somewhat well-known mythological character (won't say due to spoilers), so the show may include myths and legends along with fairy tales. There's certainly a lot of material for them to draw upon outside of Disney canon.

*********SPOILERS BEWARE*************

I saw a reference to the Knights of the Round Table in tonight's ep, and I think one of the comments was referring to Midas (Greek mythology), as well as a version of The Prince and The Pauper, I think that we were getting some Norse mythology too (though I know Greco-Roman better than Norse, they are all mostly the same to me, with different names and slightly different details).

We are clearly getting references to Grimm, and I think the wizard fight in The Thing You Love Most was a salute to Lord of the Rings. So we will see what all will be included.

I heard that Beauty and The Beast will be included, as well as Ariel.
