Episode Discussion 2x18: Selfless, Brave and True

While Mary Margaret goes off on her own in an attempt to come to grips with what she did to Cora and how her deed has affected her, she stumbles upon August, who has hidden himself away from the others and is completely made of wood -- ashamed at the actions he has taken in life; and Emma is shocked when Neal invites his fiancée, Tamara, to come to Storybrooke. Meanwhile, before the curse was cast, August is introduced to a man of magic who may be able to prevent him from turning back into wood -- but at a steep price.

Oh, crap, they turned him back into a kid! There goes any possibility of romance with Emma, I guess. :-)

I have a feeling that's why they turned him into a kid.

I will not lie - I am really upset they turned him back into kid!Pinocchio who may or may not remember anything that's happened to him, and I think that's what Snow meant about him paying a price for what he did (and ultimately receiving redemption for it).

Plus, no more Eion Bailey. Fail.

Okay, that said, the whole Mother Superior appearing from nowhere at the precise moment she was needed worked well in a land where she was a fairy, but no, just no, to her random and convenient "Here I am!"

-

Owen and Tamara - freaking scaring me.

Your comment A++++++++++

I dont like OuaT's version of the Blue fairy, as little kids my sisters and I thought of her as caring and forgiving in Disney's Pinocchio, she was just beautiful and wholesome.
OuaT's version she seems to have a high and mighty superiority complex. SMH she knew all this time and didnt tell Geppetto where August was, just argh! Her not doing anything is just adding to the problem, and look how things ended. She's just as guilty if not more for August's fate than him and Tamara.

Ugh, don't like August being turned back into a kid. Assuming he forgot more than just his warning about Tamara, a huge chunk of his identity has been erased this way. Makes me remember that scene where Neal was adamant about Rumpelstiltskin not making him young again. The idea of it was unsettling then, and it's definitely unsettling now, even though it's happened to another character...

I've noticed that parallel too and I was frustrated when that idea turned out to be a valid solution in August's case. Don't like it at all. :-(

Is every non-white character on this show going to end up dead, written off, or evil?

And let's not get into the piles upon piles of cliches and plot conveniences. This show has been rather disappointing of late.

Three weeks until the next ep? I might have lost interest by then...

As unoriginal as this is, I'm going to chime in complaining about August becoming a child again. It invalidates everything he did when he became a part of the real world. It removes all the struggles, all the hurdles, everything he might have done or accomplished as an adult. None of it matters anymore. Plus, August > Pinocchio. OUaT turned him from a character back into a flat projection...and it really bothered me.

Not a fan of Tamara, though I really wish the show would stop having random characters suddenly become part of an intricate plot. There's no such thing as a disconnected idea...everyone knows each other or knows something about someone else. Sometimes, something is exactly what it appears...just not on this show.

I wonder what happened to that kid's dad now...I have a feeling Regina ordered him killed in the woods somewhere...

the irony(?) is, plotwise it only matters what Owen thinks happened to his dad.

for all we know, Regina could have let the dad go in the forest (let the boy and father reunite)...unlikely, maybe, but I doubt its something Regina would answer either way to.

Sad that they turned August into a boy. Quiet a strange idea of second chance, sounds more like cheating than improving. I wish writers had given him a chance to learn from his mistakes instead of pretending they'd never happened!

I have to chime as another person who hated how they wrote off Eion Bailey by turning him back into a kid. August is basically dead. I hate that the character won't get to grow or learn from his mistakes, and that that was his redemption. I did like that Snow called it a price though; that she didn't see it as this wonderful thing.

On the subject of Snow, I also hate how I felt like the showing was trying to tell me that it was "dark" of Snow to slap Geppetto. While I understand where Geppetto was coming from in his desperation to save his child in any way he could, I think he also deserved that from her. And I think that was a very understandable initial reaction. I hated how quickly she got past his admission, TBH. Please, show, don't try and tell me this was her "darkness" coming out.

This episode also reminded me how much I dislike the Blue Fairy.

I agree that Geppetto deserved some negative reaction from Snow. I don't think that a slap in such situation could really mark her as "evil", but after killing Cora Snow is supposed to scrutinize her actions more carefully and judge them more strictly to assure herself that she acts as a "good" person should. And maybe that's way she so easily got past Geppetto's admission - because a "good" person should forgive...

i have a feeling Snow's blaming her "darkness" for any actions like slapping someone. its not the darkness doing it, its Snow (who rationalizes it as a sign of darkness)

did that make sense?
