Episode Discussion 1x22: A Land Without Magic

Emma and Regina team together in order to find a way to save Henry’s life. Meanwhile, in the fairytale land that was, Prince Charming attempts to escape from the Evil Queen’s clutches in order to reunite with Snow White who, unbeknownst to him, has already taken a bite of the Queen’s poison apple.

This episode was freaking crazy... OMG I AM GOING TO HAVE TO WAIT FOR THE NEXT SEASON..... THAT IS TOO LONG.....

I LOVED IT... it had all my favorite characters from the series in it...

In hindsight, it seemed like they tried to cram an awful lot into the episode, so much so that I still can't process all that happened, just because of how rushed some things were. Still, really nice to see lots of payoff and quite a cliffhanger to have us talking all summer.

I'm curious as to what kind of story arc the Fairy Tale World flashbacks will follow, since this season was about Snow and Charming getting together. It'll probably be about them taking back their respective kingdoms...

I was squeeing, loudly, at my t.v. the entire time.

I want more Emma/Regina teaming up. My OTP is this two working together for Henry's sake.

Graham *sigh*. So good. And my poor BB August. Emma should have kissed that MoFo.

Also, wish there was a Jefferson/Grace, reunion, but I did love Jefferson freeing Belle. I do hope she kicked Rumple's ass for releasing all of that power. She looks PISSED.

Someone hold me. I need to discuss the shit out of theories all summer with someone. I don't have HBO, so I won't have True Blood to distract me with this summer. *sad face*

OH GOD!!! when henry was "dead" i CRIED! when emma broke down and cried...i CRIED! when Snow and James finally remembered...and they kissed...i CRIED...i cried when rumple and bell hugged but also was all "wtf?" because...didn't belle reject rumple all in a FU type way when he didn't want to accept love?

i LOVE the cliff hanger...i WANT to watch season two now...OJDFSMKFJKSDJFKDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Everything about this was perfect to me. They didn't try to overreach and make it this huge, epic FINALE that would be hard to excel beyond. It was kinda...quiet. :) I liked that.

The ONLY thing I didn't like was that I STILL don't know who the H-L Dr. Whale is!

Kudos to the juxtaposition of Charming and Emma fighting the dragon (wholookedamazingOMG).

I'm totally with you on Dr. Whale! They've given us nothing on him, so he's either a minor character who just happened to be placed in the role of a doctor, or he's a major player we just haven't been introduced to yet.

There's a few possibilities that make total sense, but I'm so annoyed! :) He's been far too present int he show for us to know figure out who he is!

I've seen mentions of him being Peter Pan, but what are the others? There better be some information on him next season, or I'm not going to be pleased.

I'm not as interested in Whale (I don't care for him since he tried to make MM think she was dreaming), but I would like to know who Billy was in the Enchanted Forest. He's associated with Ruby, and I like her.

Yeah, we didn't to much of Billy this season. Perhaps he was a friend of hers in the Enchanted Forest, and their friendship transitioned over when the curse hit? There are certainly some minor characters that deserve more screentime, at any rate.

Yeah, maybe they were friends. I kinda go back and forth on that one. On the one hand, you have the close friendship between Jiminy and Geppetto that came through to Storybrooke. OTOH, you have Red and Snow, who were good friends, barely knowing each other in Storybrooke. Also, Ruby seems friendly with Ashley, but we don't even know if Red knew Ella. Likewise, Snow and Charming seemed friendly with Thomas and Ella, but they don't seem to know each other in Storybrooke. But with their memories returned (presuming they stay that way), I don't guess we'll explore that any further. I mean, why some friendships stayed, and some didn't.

I thought it was okay. I did think the David/Mary Margaret scene was very, very stilted. I'm disappointed we didn't get to see all the emotional reactions to memories returning. Okay, so it would have taken way too many cameos to get all the reactions from one-shot characters I wanted. But I wanted to see Emma and her parents and Abigail and Frederick, at least. Maybe next season, but with the new magical threat, I'm not sure how much time there will be in those first few moments.

I'm thrilled that we've been shown that Rumpel did not have any altruistic motives. I've always felt that way. He wants Belle and he wants Bae, but he is still all about power (via magic) and will hurt or kill anyone else to get what he wants. He's a bad guy, a villain. I'm not a Rumbelle shipper, so I hope she kicks him to the curb when she finds out what an awful person he is. I'm okay if she doesn't, I guess, but I just don't want to watch the ship, because I think he already gets enough screetime, and I want to see more of other characters. OTOH, I really want Bae to reject him if he shows up. This is exactly what Bae didn't want. Also, this is at least the third time Rumpel has had the opportunity to be uncursed and live his life, and the third time he's rejected it. I'm not a fan of infinite chances. He had his. Take redemption off the table and let the heroes take him down like the baddie he is. This is especially true if he is not currently under in the influence of the knife/curse.

The true love potion did not match the one in "Heart of Darkness" - continuity error or plot point?

I'm looking forward to seeing Snow and Charming fighting in the Enchanted Forest flashback scenes. Hope to see Frederick and Abigail involved in the fighting (maybe find out what happened to Midas?). Maybe see Snow and Charming meet Thomas or Gepetto? However, I'm not exactly sure how the flashbacks will work now that everyone knows who they are.

Emma and her family issues will hopefully get a good bit of screentime. It will be fun to see her adapt to the truth. Plus everyone she knows, except Henry, will have different names, and many of them have different personalities, too. Will be interesting to see her adapt to that.

So, there's seems to be a split between people who think the characters will be back in the Enchanted Forest and those who think magic is brought Storybrooke. Most people, myself included, seem to fall into the latter category. Thoughts?

With the war coming to Storybrooke, I hope we get to see more of Gretel (she's awesome, even if she is a kid and really isn't important - one guest spot would be fine). More Frederick and Abigail. Other royals, maybe? Hopefully Jiminy and the Blue Fairy will be heavily involved - I really like them.

Do we want a moustache-twirling villain, or do we want fleshed characters that have strayed? If they put Gold as a plain ol' villain, I hope they put Regina as the later; the show does not need a bunch of stereotypical villains.
I don't do "gray" - they just come off as evil to me. Regina and Rumpel are both evil to me because of the actions I have seen them carry out. Unless they actually *change* (and that means do better and not hurt innocents over a period of at least one full season), I will regard them as evil. To me, they are not people who have "strayed" - they are murderers. They have reasons for being evil, but that doesn't make them any less evil.

I think it is evident enough that fairytale land was somehow displaced by this bubble reality that is Storybrooke; the most probable option is that dropping the potion on the well has the purpose of dipping this world in its magic.That seems likely to me, too. I admit I still don't really have the mechanics down. Do you think the magic will pass the boundaries of Storybrooke into the rest of the world or not? I really do think the story will stay in Storybrooke (for this season, at least), but they might want to branch out in the future.

I think Rumpelstiltskin has a more complicated reason for bringing magic back. Not just because of power hunger. Certainly, he wants power. But I think he believes he needs it to find Bae, and once he finds Bae, he'll give it up.
