Who is crazier?
May. 11th, 2012 07:47 pmOk, so I've been thinking about this for a while and now that the details have been confirmed in 1.21, I have a question about Snow and Regina.
(contains details of 1.21 "Apple Red As Blood"... obviously).
Okay, so Regina calls a parlay and Snow comes to meet her at the barn where it all began. She then takes Snow to Daniel's grave and tells her in great, fine pointed detail that this is why she's out to hurt Snow, how the plan will work and what it will do to her. And Snow is quite visibly surprised to learn of Daniel's death.
Which brings to mind two great questions as to Snow's earlier dialogue and actions.
1. In the pilot, when Regina threatens her and Charming and all the land with the curse, James questions her ability to be so evil and crazy, to which Snow replies "She poisoned an apple because she thought I was prettier than her."
Which... no. Unless Snow took "Daniel died because of you, you loose lipped bitch. Death is too good for you, you destroyed my life, I want you to suffer for all eternity in an attempt to appease even the slightest piece of his death! Eat this poisoned apple!" as Regina's way of saying "Bitch, you're prettier than me. GTFO." OR, Snow chose to make up this crazy ass delusional lie, which they ALL KNOW is a crazy ass delusional lie, in order to demonstrate how crazy Regina is.

2. When the Hunter first tried to kill Snow for Regina and she wrote that letter? All "Yeah, I know I destroyed your last chance for happiness and took away any hope of love you may ever have had, so... fine, kill me if you must. I forgive". I mean... sure, sacrifice is noble and all, but... if she thought Daniel was still alive at this point (which she did, because she sure was surprised when Regina told her in 1.21), why didn't the letter say "Bitch, fair enough, I made a mistake when I was barely old enough to ride a horse, but... before you resort to KILLING ME, why don't you try to find Daniel? I'll help, even."
?????
Like, seriously, instead of huddling down in water logged caves stealing from the Queen, running for her life and bow hunting for food and shit... why didn't she at least try to find Daniel herself? Not even one little attempt at self preservation? C'mon.

Date: 2012-05-11 11:12 am (UTC)As far as I know, the pilot had been shot a lot more early than the rest of the season (I think that's the case with most new shows). Sometimes storylines haven't been fully developed yet when a show shoots its pilot or they are changed for the rest of the season. What I've read is that the producers and writers used the original "prettier than her" reason from the fairy tale but later decided to make the matter more complex, which is why there's the continuity error.
2.: I'm not sure tbh. I mean, Snow obviously knew how much the Queen resented her, so maybe Snow thought reasoning with her wouldn't work? And maybe she thought that the Queen's anger wasn't that much about Daniel himself but more about how she had betrayed the Queen's trust. Also, Snow probably had no idea where to start with a search for Daniel, and she didn't have the means for such a search either after being driven away from the castle. At least, that would be my guess...

Date: 2012-05-11 11:45 am (UTC)And Snow didn't want her people to suffer, which is why she was willing to die for them. And she's grown up by now. She's in her twenties, she probably has realized that Regina lied about not really loving Daniel and she feels guilty. We've all done things when we were children that we didn't fully understand at the time, and Snow is no different.

Date: 2012-05-11 03:15 pm (UTC)Yeah, I get the sacrifice thing and regret of mistakes made as kids, but I think from the point of view of Snow, who only thought that Daniel had left or forced to leave, murder and sacrifice seems a little extreme.

Date: 2012-05-11 12:56 pm (UTC)I think it would be interesting from a storytelling perspective to have them both have separate reasons for their feud/estrangement. I think Regina was so damaged by what happened to Daniel that anything after that probably didn't even register as a reason to hate Snow, maybe just confirmation at best.
Also, there's a decent chance Snow hasn't told anyone (including Charming) what she did to Regina out of shame, and so she came up with a crazy but plausible reason for Regina hating her.

Date: 2012-05-11 03:19 pm (UTC)I have always thought that there is a lot of history to be gained in that time period of Regina's marriage to Leopold and the relationship between Snow and Regina at that time. There has to have been some pretty important moments, which they'll probably explore (or at least, hopefully) in S2.
I'd love to get some more depth there.
Also, I hadn't thought about the fact that, while everyone would pretty much know that Regina bribed Snow with Charming's life to eat the apple that they still don't actually know WHY. I mean, I had just assumed it was all part of the package, but obviously it's not. I... should pay more attention. That makes more sense.

Date: 2012-05-11 07:30 pm (UTC)As for the letter she wrote, it seems as though Regina had made it clear to Snow already that she ruined Regina's life even if the details of Daniel's death were not revealed as yet. So long as Snow believes that there is no chance of Daniel ever coming back (for whatever reason) her actions make sense.
