Episode Discussion 1x21: An Apple Red as Blood

Henry pleads with Emma to stay in Storybrooke and continue her quest as the savior of the fairytale dwellers, and Regina concocts a plan that could rid her of Emma forever. Meanwhile, back in the fairytale land that was, Snow White enlists the aid of her fellow fairytale cohorts to attack the Evil Queen and save Prince Charming's life.

OK, if Henry isn't swinging a freaking keyblade in some alt universe, he SHOULD. The kid needs a wheelbarrow to haul around his balls, and he's only TEN. He's trying to save the whole town, not just himself, which puts him a lot higher than anyone else in this series. While I doubt they'll kill him off, we are dealing with a some Scoobies (Joss can't tie his shoes without some good character dying - see Tara, Penny, and Wash), writers from Lost, and a pair of screenwriters that took Steve Lisberger's pretty electronic dream and turned it into nightmare fuel - served cold with a shot of Angostura bitters for good measure.

Regina? Not a fun position, realizing that you can't just bully your way around. You lost the mileage on your Freudian Excuse a long time ago when you had your husband whacked. I wonder if her nastiness isn't somehow related to taking (or taking on) Cora's power. Kinda fits with magic having a price tag and parallels the "you break it, you bought it" problem that Rumple's got. Did she inherit Cora's coldness with the power? For that matter, did Cora get corrupted by her magic, trading her heart for power?

Rumple-Gold: Hands-down, he and Henry make this series, IMO. He leaves Regina swinging in the breeze and you can't help loving him. Hands down, the most magnificent chessmaster to hit the Disney family since David freakin' Xanatos.

Snow, Red, Granny, and the Dwarves kicking butt- AWESOME. but, Snow? That was freaking DUMB of you to think an enemy keeps her word, especially since after you saw King George the Charmless behaving like a total dick. Like the ads on Craigslist - Never go alone, and always ask to see the merchandise before you buy.

Mary Margaret's "What the HELL, Hero?" lecture to Emma? Oh, so satisfying. I knew there was some part of you that wasn't ground to glass by being Regina's punching bag and that crappy treatment Prince David the Charmless gave you. Wild guess; I think she has figured out on some level she's Snow White, or at least feels "Gee, wouldn't it be nice if it were true?" That's why she let Henry have the book and wasn't all that ticked about him stealing her credit cards to hitch a bus ride.

I still wonder if Archie could be a wildcard in all this. He was the first townsperson to stand up to Regina. He was reluctantly drafted into Operation Cobra, and he did see James-David's flashback. Maybe it's too much Bioware, but I know Sbarge can act the hell out of heroics if you give him a chance. We also have seen very little of him. Confessing to the "conscience" might also slow down August's wooden problem.

I think when her mother ripped out Daniel's heart, she kind of ripped out the Queen/Regina's. In the last episode, Charming felt Snow's pain so maybe true love ties a bond? That's my theory now.

Rumple is seriously the best character in this show although Red and Grumpy are becoming my favorites as well! I adore Archie so I am hoping he'll be important in the last episode especially as he's Jiminy Cricket.

Okay, just because he's Jiminy Cricket :D

Still bored by Rumpel, sorry. But I do adore Henry and think he's absolutely fantastic and wonderful. He's been the driving force behind breaking the curse and saving everyone ever since he went out and got Emma. So my sister remarked to me that it's interesting that they've (seemingly) side-lined him for the finale. It may be the only way Emma steps up and takes action.

Previously, I've said bad guys bore me, and they do. I've also said that Regina was actually bad guy I loved to hate, that I enjoyed every time she was on-screen, and enjoyed every time the good guys got the better of her. Not anymore. Now she bores me, too. Not really sure when the transition took place, but there you have it. More of the good guys, less of bad, please.

I enjoyed all Snow's friends having her back, that was lovely. Still not sure how Geppetto ended upon the war-council, though. But I really want to know what the heck kind favor Grumpy was owed! Is this still about Nova? Or about saving the fairy dust?

I would love to see more Archie. I really like him. Alas, I think his lack of knowledge made him give *bad* advice tonight. The war does not need to end - there are things worse than war and being cursed for eternity is one of them. Henry has not retreated deeper into delusion - he's gotten more of the truth and been heroic. And I do think Regina *would* hurt Henry if driven far enough. But Archie doesn't know it's all real, doesn't know she's a murderer, etc.

All of this! FOREVER! Love the comparison to Xanatos, too. So few people appreciate how amazing that show was/is.
