Episode Discussion 1x20: The Stranger

August promises to enlighten Emma and take her on a journey that will show her how she can beat Regina, and possibly take custody of Henry; and with Mary Margaret returning to work, Regina puts a plan in motion to seduce David. Meanwhile, in the fairytale land that was, with the Evil Queen's curse about to strike, Geppetto agrees to a plan that will save Snow White and Prince Charming's daughter, but with a proviso that could also save his own son.

AGREE!!

AUGUST WHY DID YOU LEAVE BABY EMMA!!!!!!!!!

EMMA YOU IDIOT HOW CAN YOU BE SO BLIND!!!!!!

I said these exact words....

I'm so upset that Emma is so blind she can't even see hard evidence (excuse the pun) of August's wooden leg.

I can't believe August didn't take care of Emma! Of course it was only seven. His father was asking too much of him. Gepetto was being really selfish. Of course he was looking out for his son, with everything he had lost in his life, i'm sure it was excruciating imagining losing his son.

However, Emma started crying at the end of the episode, and acting out of desperation. Does that mean that perhaps there is a chink in her armor...

The last episode will tell us everything we want to know, and most important LEAVE US DESPERATE FOR MORE!

Emma was a complete idiot! Kidnapping Henry. WTF was she thinking?????

Oh Emma, sweetie. Kidnapping Henry if you were planning on winning any custody battles in the near future was probably the wrong move.

Yea, real smart on her part. She's really upset though. Apparently hearing that the happiness of an entire town rests on her shoulders doesn't sit well with her.

I don't quite see how being upset justifies kidnapping a kid she has no legal right to. She's not been playing the part of virtuous, good-always-wins heroine very much lately.

Logically, it doesn't. But Emma's not running on logic right now. She's running on stress and emotional beatdown from being powerless against a clearly wicked woman.

From: [identity profile] devexation.livejournal.com
Hmm, acting on her emotions from feeling powerless after an emotional beat down... sure sounds like a certain 'villain' we're supposed to hate (read: Regina). I understand that Emma is not thinking clearly at the moment, but that doesn't change the fact that she did kidnap Henry.

I only worry about the message this show is sending about adoptive parents being 'omg so terrible!11!~'. Regina has been a good mother to Henry (just look at how he turned out), and Emma even conceded to the fact that Regina does love him. We have seen very little of Emma's parenting, and I'm not sure why we're supposed to believe she'd be superior simply because 'she's good'. Emma has no legal right to him, and Regina has been generous as hell considering a restraining order would not be out of place in the closed adoption she agreed to. Emma should not have taken Henry, plain and simple.

At this point, I think the curse has completely eaten her brain. Or something has.

Truf. Each episode makes me cringe more and more at her stupidity. If they're expecting me to root for her, make her earn it. Bring back the feisty, kickass Emma from the pilot, show.

I love Emma, I support Emma in everything involving Henry, but I so wanted to punch her in the face the moment she took off.

I'd say that she did it cause she thinks no one can leave storybrooke other than her and Henry (and august but that's not part of this) but if she doesn't believe in the fairytale stuff she shouldnt believe that either

I don't even get what rights she thinks she has on Henry. She gave him up when he was a baby. And someone said it was a closed adoption. How does she think she can win custody?

THANK YOU. Besides what you said, she has no solid proof of Regina being a supposed 'psychopath' (Emma's use of the term is problematic in itself) that she could use in court. The way the show is handling adoption leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth.

Gold said that since August was dying anyway, he would at least see if there was anything he could get out of it.

I have a question:

Why doesn't August "Pinocchio" show everyone in town his wooden leg? Maybe HE can be some sort of savior! People in town might start believing if he told them their story. And his own.

Just my thoughts. I've kinda lost all hope in Emma at this point.

But if they believe he's a crackpot, like Emma does, it will only look like a regular leg, just as it did to Emma.

If Emma believed already, the show wouldn't last beyond two seasons, I think. It is frustrating though.

I figured Emma wouldn't believe this soon either. The whole series depends on it. However... something like this... sooooo frustrating!

I was hoping though, that the townspeople had more faith than Emma. Maybe showing Henry.

Henry would definitely see wood. But he obviously wouldn't be able to convince Emma at this point.

I think emma will believe in the next episode...but what will keep it going is all the plot holes left open for season two...i mean..even from the beginning of the season...we STILL have unanswered questions...too many to be filled in next week's episode...will we find out how the dwarves got out of the mine?!?

will we find out if Mr. Gold finds bae? how about Regina's mother...how was she killed? or the mad hatter?! where is he?!

there are just too many un answered questions to fill in a 1 hour slot..it needs a second season

or maybe the sneak peek we see of regina holding the sword in prep to slash regina...was from NEXT season?!?!?! OH ABC!!! WHAT A TEASE YOU ARE!

Possible Emma will believe in the next episode, but it seems too soon to me. Then again, next season could be a lot of mishaps as she tries to figure out just exactly who's on her side and what she's supposed to do to break the curse. I don't think believing is enough.

I also want to know why Rumple always wanted other people's babies.

Date: 2012-04-30 06:34 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] goddessastra.livejournal.com
maybe the baby thing is some deep seeded father son problem...he can't find bae...so he wants to find a replacement instead...

what i want to know is who is August calling on the phone.
i can understand why Geppetto did what he did, i would do the same to save my son if i were in his shoes. and i can understand why August did what he did when he was a kid. August was 7 years old when Emma was born, making him responsible to make sure Emma does what she is supposed to do, was not a good idea. even if August had stayed he and Emma would not have been able to stay together, the system would have separated them.
i can under stand where Emma is coming from in her disbelief. she has had a hard life and has probably been lied to a lot growing up so that she will only believe what she can see, hear , and touch. knew more than my share of people like that growing up.

Jane Espenson confirmed on twitter that it was Henry August called on the phone.

And I definitely agree with everything you said.

my heart was pounding feverishly toward the end. I think emma WANTS to believe deep down but she is scared. scared of the responsibility of having to be responsible for ALL those people...so she denies the truth so she doesn't have to face it...

i did it before i started student teaching. the thought of being responsible for 17 five year old kids scared the shit out of me.

the truth is out there emma...face your fears!!

and i got all sentimental when August and daddy were in the garage...

GOOD GOD I WANT THE NEXT EPISODE SO EFFIN BAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FJDSKFJKSLDJFKLSDJ!!! n

i also love how there are STILL so effin many plot holes that can be left open for next season...like...will rumple EVER find bae??? will we ever find out how Regina's mother died? will we ever find out about belle some more? or how about how gepetto carved Pinocchio?

I want AU fic with August staying with Emma.

*goes to write some*

These guys with their cliffhangers. I'm both excited and scared to see the season finale cliffhanger in 2 weeks.

I would not mind seeing that fic.

Same here.

I wonder if it was the curse that made him leave her? It seems to be responsible for an awful lot of asinine behavior . . .

Very, very true. David's behavior especially.

Fourthing this. Wait, we have to wait two weeks?! That would be why CTV didn't show a trailer, then.

Yes, the writers certainly love their cliffhangers, don't they?

I am gonna write one. I'm gonna start this week writing it. I keep getting scenes with teenage!Emma rebelling against August and saying that the fairy tale world is all in his head.

The shipper in me wants them to end up together romantically, but the other part of me is wondering if that really fits well with the story. Restraining the shipper in me is so hard! XD

I love how things are sort of coming full circle. It's also I feel like the first time we are really seeing August as a character (as opposed to a plot device) and I like what I see!

I get the feeling that even when Emma does start believing... it's not going to be the magical end of Storybrooke. She's going to have to work her ass off to get rid of the curse AFTER she starts believing.

I don't see her just saying "Okay, it's Fairytale Land. Hi mom and dad!" *sentimental moment*

No I definitely don't see that happening.

On another plotline...

Regina, that was low. Even for you that's low.

David: Thank you for NOT thinking with your dick this time and getting the hell out of there before you did something dumb. You are rebounding from Kathryn, and didn't have the balls to keep your word to Mary Margaret. For once, you showed some sense (and self-preservation)!

Mary Margaret: That bitch tried to land you a life sentence in the State Pen and treats you like a verbal punching bag. Don't forgive a damn thing until she repents (likely a cold day in hell)

Metatext punchline: Oh, Regina. Nice attempt at the Jack Thompson school of "video games kill a kid's imagination." Would probably have worked better if Henry wasn't hooked on Encom's finest and the town shrink didn't sound suspiciously like Kaiden.
