In the episode, "Manhattan", Regina confirms people who were not given an alternate identity by the Dark Curse will not be affected by crossing the town line. This statement also confirms Mr. Gold was given false memories by the curse since he needed a potion to keep his Enchanted Forest memories intact.

Also confirmed is leaving Storybrooke will result in loss of magic regardless of whether the person keeps their memories.

You know... I hadn't even thought about Gold having false memories. But I guess it makes sense.
