Rumplestilskin and Regina had a complicated relationship. It had little to do with the family intertwining. It had nothing to do with his meddling in her affairs and molding her into the trigger of the curse, as twisted that was.
In Regina, Rumple had found someone he could go toe to toe and get as good as he gave.
Which is why when he found Regina in her garden weeping, he wasn’t sure what to do.
He let his fatherly instincts take over and comforted her to both of their amazements. More amazing is that she let him do so.
