In Only You, the part where blood is used to track someone was originally an idea that writer Andrew Chambliss had for an episode of the supernatural drama series The Vampire Diaries, which he was a writer of. However, it never made it in that form. Since then, he'd wanted to use that element for years, so when Regina needed a way to track Henry, he realized that his old idea would work.
