Episode Discussion 1x18: The Stable Boy

Emma continues her exhaustive search for evidence that will prove Mary Margaret’s innocence in the murder of David’s wife, Kathryn.
Meanwhile, in the fairytale land that was and before evil blackened her soul, Regina must choose between betraying her mother and marrying for true love, or betrothing royalty and living a regal – but loveless – life.

Not looking at the summary 'til after, but I did want to comment (while I remembered!) that I love how different Lana Parrilla can make herself appear from scene-to-scene!

I was just about to comment on this, too - how it's just a little unsettling (not bad, just weird) to see Regina so young and fresh-faced-looking...

She even got the mannerisms down pat. Excellent casting there.

Am I the only person who was disappointed with this episode? I wrote about it at my journal, but the edited version disappointment is: I can't get behind Regina. I don't think her hatred of Snow is enough of a reason to curse a whole world. Also, she must have known that her mother would have played on Snow's weakness. Snow was a child. If anything, Regina should have wanted revenge against her mother, not Snow.

Her grief blinds to anything "reasonable". Her mother is too powerful and like any abusive parent, brings out the vulnerabilities in their child. Regina sees Snow as the "culprit" because she is someone she can really enact revenge against.

It's not reasonable, but it's revenge. It's grief. Grief isn't reasonable.

I've seen that child actor before. She's really sweet.

I don't think you're supposed to be able to 'get behind' Regina? Just because she has a tragic past, doesn't mean her behavior was ever going to be justified.

What happened was pretty much what I anticipated would occur.

I didn't catch who the woman at the end in the alley was - was it Cinderella? Why was it so shocking she showed up? I'm sure I'm forgetting something important.

I think you are bang on. I agree - it played out how I expected. All the hints pointed exactly to this.

Regina may see Snow as the "culprit" and her grief and anger may twist her views of the world and of Snow, but I'm still disappointed with the episode. I don't buy Regina's reasoning - the whole world must pay because of what Snow did and because Snow got her "happy ending".

The people from the show said we would understand Regina's hatred after this week and maybe I do, just a bit. But, I still don't think it justifies cursing a whole world.

Same. I knew from the moment that a stable boy was casted and we were told it was a Regina episode. I knew that her true love aka Daniel would die and she would blame Snow. And, I'm disappointed by it.

i LOVED this episode...it left me on the seat the entire time!

Regina's mother...it really hit home for me because my mom was the same way...though not to THAT extent...my mom had tons of "misguided love" and thought she was just trying to help me...but all it did was hurt my feelings...so..i could sort of relate to regina...

but...i don't feel her "revenge" is ...well...you could SEE the EXACT moment her brain derailed and she lost it. you could see the look in her face as her brain just snapped. she went craycray...

Like i said...and that scene confirms it...she needs to see archie and get some meds...she snapped and is not right in the heada

I don't think it's justified...as if she CHOSE to do what she did to snow...i just think...in that exact moment when she hugs Snow at the end of the episode...her brain snapped and she went crazy...like..mentally....

so...her view on the world and what she wants to do to snow...Regina suffered the most traumatic loss and i've heard stories of LOTS of people who pretty much lose it when something tragic happens...

so thats just my take. Regina pretty much fried her frontal lobe...part of the brain responsible for reasoning (i think)...and now she can't see logic/reasoning...

And as i keep saying about Regina and this episode proves it: She needs to see Archie BADLY and she needs to be put on medication

There were moments in the episode where Regina seemed mentally unbalanced because of Cora. So yes, maybe that was the moment where she had a mental break.

Sometimes I think modern stories have inculcated us with the idea that no one's really evil, just misunderstood. We may not recognize it always, but it's definitely a strong theme. One good thing about this show is that it's willing to show evil as, well, evil. (Although with Rumpel they may be going more for the "misunderstood" vibe. Time will tell.)

But that theme in our culture helps explain the reactions people keep having to Regina. Like after she killed Graham, so many people were like "How could she! That's horrible! I don't like her anymore!" Um, hello, she's a villain! She's supposed to do things that you don't like! :-)

And it's hard to convict a woman if the deceased is ALIVE! lol

I'm suspicious though because Kathryn looked not right. Like she wasn't suppose to be there. And how does someone just land in the back of a diner and no one sees them?

i'm thinking GOLD had something to do with Kathryn's disappearance and her REappearance. The preview for next episode at the end of this one said "Evil betrays evil". So in my mind, that's Gold betraying Regina.

When people lose it... they don't see justification. They just see themselves. Of course Regina had tried to JUST punish Snow. The huntsman, the poisoned apple. All that. It didn't work, and then when she got her happy ending with Charming it was over. She was done playing games and losing. She needed the biggest magic she could find to finally give herself the upper hand and bring down Snow. Yes the entire world of Fairy Tale land had to go with her, but that's the price you pay when you have evil queens in your world and they are PISSED. lol

Hell, even Maleficent was telling her for the love of all that is evil don't do it! But, crazy is as crazy does. lol

BTW: Can I just say what an amazing actress we have playing the Evil Queen!! :) (I forget her name I know it starts or ends with a P or an L...)

She can play such an evil character and have you convinced she is truly evil. And then switch it up and play someone sweet and innocent. I could see Regina as normal, as sane and maybe wanting to settle down with Daniel and have a family. I saw the way she treated Snow too. Very kind.

Then at the end "I should have let her die on that horse!" AND SHES BACK!! lol
