Sometimes I forget about this show's weird stance on adoption and how biological relationships trump everything else.

They do have a strange view that way, for all that A&E tried to say that they don't have an "agenda" with seeming anti-adoption.

yeah, I was just rewatching s1 and s2 with this in mind, it's so in your face! It's cringe-worthy. The bias may very well have been unintentional, but it's still there.
