The season premiere was okay. I thought it plodded around too much as a result of its trying to set things up for coming events, and the new characters suffered for it, but otherwise, it was okay.
The characterization of Aurora was egregious, that's all there is to it really. Different canon not withstanding, they remove pretty much the only thing worthwhile about her character, agreeable and friendly personality, and transform her into the person you ultimately learn to ignore by either tuning out with headphones or the learned skills of selective hearing. I didn't need another reason to dislike Sleeping Beauty anymore than the original animated film gave me.
Belle continues to be character-sabotaged by playing the "Pet Project" girl who needs to save Mr. Gold. I was cheering for her when she left the shop, but then she comes back and with a body language that implies she needs to apologize for something. Are you kidding, writers?
Why was Prince Philip speaking with a UK-accent? Why his entire purpose simply to serve the writer's fantasy ideal of the suggested "Love Triangle" and like most of the male characters not named "Prince James Charming" destined disappear and probably not be heard from ever again? Poor character management continues in this series. It's not even that his actor is horrible, he's just given nothing to work with beyond his wardrobe.
The biggest weakness of this series is the writer's need to have everyone in love with someone. Why the heck does Mulan even need to be in love with Phillip? Why could she not have a strong friendship with this man without any indication "oh, maybe she's in love with him?" I hate you writers. Also, why was she dressed like someone apart of the Mongolian army as opposed to a Chinese Soldier right out of the Northern Wei Dynasty (if there's a difference in this regard)? Jamie Chung and Mulan (who managed to maintain consistency on some level as a character) was probably the highlight of the episode for me (Regina owning James notwithstanding), primarily.

No comment on the Dementor.
